It is essential that the performance of any building in a potential fire situation be considered at the initial design stage.
Designing for fire safety is rather different from many other design exercises. Although fire may never occur throughout the life of the building, fire safety design and precautions are still critical due to potential risk of loss of life.
Building material references to fireproof, firesafe, self-extinguishing and fire retarding products, for example, are often interpreted as the equivalent of "non-combustible." Designers should be aware of the potential risk in specifying materials that are not actually non-combustible. The sure way to limit the risk from smoke and toxic fumes is to use non-combustible materials which have been independently certified as such.
If all materials used in a building are non-combustible it is more likely that the final design solution will deliver low fire risk for the building occupants, fire fighters and the building fabric.
